The 50 Rejections and the Hallway Question
At Shohoku High School in Kanagawa Prefecture, Hanamichi Sakuragi is feared as an explosive, red-haired gang leader who holds the unfortunate middle school record of being rejected by 50 consecutive girls. The 50th girl famously told him, "Sorry Sakuragi-kun, I'm in love with Oda from the basketball team." Consequently, Sakuragi violently resents the sport.
All of that changes on his first week at Shohoku when a sweet, enthusiastic girl named Haruko Akagi approaches him without fear, looking at his tall 6'2" frame and asking with shining eyes: "Excuse me... do you like basketball?"
Infatuated at first glance, Sakuragi immediately declares himself an athletic prodigy ("tensai"). In the gym, trying to impress Haruko with a monstrous slam dunk, Sakuragi leaps so ridiculously high that he smashes his forehead directly against the wooden backboard! Despite the comical concussion, his raw jumping power and stamina capture the attention of the school.
Clashing with Gori and Rivalry with Rukawa
Sakuragi is challenged to an arena basketball duel by the imposing team captain, Takenori Akagi ("Gori"), who turns out to be Haruko's older brother. Through unconventional grit and an accidental pants-pulling foul, Sakuragi scores a point and joins the Shohoku Basketball Club.
However, Sakuragi's jealousy explodes with the arrival of Kaede Rukawa, an icy, effortlessly brilliant rookie small forward who sweeps women off their feet—including Haruko. Sakuragi views Rukawa as his ultimate mortal enemy, sparking an electric rivalry that drives both players to transcend their physical limits.
Under the wise, gentle guidance of Coach Mitsuyoshi Anzai (the "White-Haired Buddha"), Sakuragi is subjected to basic dribbling and rebounding drills while the rest of the team runs scrimmages. Rather than quitting, Sakuragi's innate athletic intuition blossoms.
The Five Men of Shohoku: Ryota Miyagi and Hisashi Mitsui
Shohoku's starting five comes together through sheer drama:
- Ryota Miyagi: A lightning-fast, undersized point guard recovering from a gang hospital brawl who bonds instantly with Sakuragi over their mutual girl rejections.
- Hisashi Mitsui: A former Junior High MVP whose knee injury led him into delinquency. Mitsui leads a gang to trash the gym, but upon seeing Coach Anzai enter the room, collapses into uncontrollable sobs, uttering one of anime's most legendary lines: "Sensei... I want to play basketball again!"
With Akagi (Center), Sakuragi (Power Forward), Rukawa (Small Forward), Mitsui (Shooting Guard), and Miyagi (Point Guard), Shohoku transforms from an obscure underdog into a national-level powerhouse.
The Kanagawa Inter-High Qualifiers and the Buzz Cut
In the Kanagawa tournament, Shohoku defeats Shoyo High led by player-coach Kenji Fujima. Facing the reigning provincial champions Kainan High, Akagi suffers a severe ankle sprain, and Sakuragi dominates the glass as the "King of Rebounds." In the game's final seconds, trailing by two points, Sakuragi mistakenly passes the ball to Kainan's center Takasago instead of Akagi, causing Shohoku's heartbreaking loss.
Overwhelmed by guilt for costing Gori's dream, Sakuragi shaves his iconic pompadour into a severe buzz cut, demonstrating his absolute dedication to the sport. Shohoku rebounds to defeat Ryonan High and their superstar Akira Sendoh, securing second place in Kanagawa and qualifying for the National Inter-High Championship in Hiroshima.
The Miracle Against Sannoh Industry
At the National Championship, Shohoku draws the most formidable draw imaginable: the three-time consecutive national champions, Sannoh Industry, led by Japan's #1 high school player, Eiji Sawakita.
Down by 20 points in the second half, Coach Anzai benches Sakuragi and explains that offensive rebounds create four-point swings. Sakuragi jumps atop the scorer's table, boldly declaring to the stunned arena that he will defeat Sannoh. Dominating the backboard against the colossal Mikio and Masashi Kawata, Sakuragi breathes fiery momentum back into Shohoku.
Diving over the media table to save a loose ball, Sakuragi severely injures his lower back. When Coach Anzai attempts to substitute him out to preserve his athletic future, Sakuragi touches the coach's shoulder, remembering Haruko's question: "Old man... when was your glory days? During the national team? For me... my glory days are right now!" He turns to Haruko in the stands, telling her honestly: "I love it. This time it's no lie."
In the final four seconds, trailing 78-77, Rukawa drives down the court, draws double coverage, and passes the ball to an open Sakuragi waiting at the right baseline. Remembering his 20,000 summer practice jump shots, Sakuragi murmurs: "Left hand is just for support." The ball swishes through the net at the buzzer! Shohoku defeats the invincible Sannoh Industry 79-78. Rukawa and Sakuragi walk toward each other and deliver an uncharacteristic, thunderous high-five—cementing their names in anime history.
