The Childhood Promise and the Frustration of Adulthood
Japan suffers from the highest rate of kaiju emergence in the world. Colossal monsters regularly ravage metropolises, leaving behind craters and toxic gore. The defense of the country falls upon the Anti-Kaiju Defense Force, an elite military unit equipped with high-tech powered suits synchronized to biological kaiju fibers.
As children, Kafka Hibino and his friend Mina Ashiro watched their hometown crushed by a monster. They swore a solemn pact to join the Defense Force together and wipe out every kaiju. Years later, Mina has fulfilled her promise, rising to become the celebrated Captain of the Third Division, famous for decimating giant monsters with her anti-fortress cannon.
Kafka, on the other hand, failed the Defense Force physical exam repeatedly. Now 32 years old, he works for Monster Sweeper Inc., shoveling toxic entrails and dismembering defeated kaiju corpses. Feeling like a failure who broke his promise, Kafka's passion is reignited when an ambitious 18-year-old part-timer, Reno Ichikawa, joins the crew and informs him that the Defense Force has raised the recruitment age limit to 33.
The Bizarre Parasite and the Birth of Kaiju No. 8
After Kafka protects Reno from a surviving after-beast in an alley, both are hospitalized. While recuperating, a tiny, winged, insectoid kaiju speaks the chilling words: "Found you" and forces itself down Kafka's open mouth.
Moments later, Kafka undergoes an agonizing mutation, turning into a muscular, skull-faced humanoid monster with glowing teal veins and unimaginable physical power. When an elderly hospital patient screams in terror, Kafka punches a hole straight through the hospital wall, inadvertently fleeing into the city.
Encountering another kaiju attacking a mother and child in the suburbs, Kafka tests his new power. A single punch from his monstrous fist completely detonates the gigantic monster into a red mist of flesh and bone. When the Defense Force detects the seismic energy signature, they measure his fortitude at a record-breaking 9.8—surpassing all known historical threats. The military officially designates this mystery humanoid beast as Kaiju No. 8, issuing an unconditional kill-on-sight order.
Cadet Training and the Third Division
Learning to shift back into human form, Kafka applies for the Defense Force exam alongside Reno. During the exam, Kafka's combat suit synchronization is an embarrassing 1%, making him the laughingstock of the recruits. However, teenage prodigy Kikoru Shinomiya—daughter of the Defense Force Director General—proves her unmatched genius.
When a sentient, humanoid kaiju (later identified as Kaiju No. 9) revives the neutralized test kaiju into deadly killers and fatally injures Kikoru, Kafka transforms into Kaiju No. 8 in secret, obliterates the boss monster, and saves Kikoru's life. Recognizing Kafka's heroic heart, Kikoru promises to keep his monstrous identity a secret.
Impressed by Kafka's encyclopedic knowledge of monster anatomy from his years in clean-up work, Vice Captain Soshiro Hoshina inducts Kafka as an apprentice cadet in the Third Division.
The Battle of Tachikawa Base and Kafka's Unmasking
During a massive assault on Tachikawa Base led by a pterosaur-like Honju (Kaiju No. 10), Vice Captain Hoshina's twin-blade style pushes the monster to the limit, while Mina Ashiro blasts its core with her cannon.
However, in its dying moments, the Honju gathers the corpses of hundreds of wyvern beasts into a colossal biological bomb falling directly onto the base. With his teammates facing immediate vaporizing death, Kafka abandons all self-preservation. In full view of Mina Ashiro, the entire Third Division, and military surveillance cameras, Kafka transforms into Kaiju No. 8. Leaping into the stratosphere, he unleashes an atomic-level punch that detonates the bomb harmlessly in the upper atmosphere.
Landing back on the scorched tarmac, Kafka willingly submits to arrest by Captain Mina Ashiro. Transferred to headquarters, Kafka faces Director General Isao Shinomiya, armed with numbered weapon FS-1002 (made from the remains of Kaiju No. 2). In a brutal arena duel, Isao tests whether Kafka is a monster in human disguise or a human with a monster's power. By showing restraint and refusing to kill Isao even when the kaiju parasite attempts to hijack his brain, Kafka passes the trial. Rather than executing him, the Defense Force officially integrates Kaiju No. 8 into their ranks as humanity's ultimate trump card against the emergent Kaiju No. 9.
